The Singapore Slingers have continued their dominating form at the Brunei Cup by posting a crushing 97-54 victory over the Darwin Airport All-Stars.

In two days the Slingers have managed to defeat two teams by some of the highest winning margins in the Brunei Cup’s seven-year history.

Taking the court without their star import Mike Helms who was forced to sit out and rest a niggling groin injury, the Slingers proved that they are well on track to make an impact in the upcoming NBL season by registering a 43-point victory just one day after their record 52-point thrashing of the Jordan All-Stars.

The Detroit native and NBL All-Star has been receiving treatment for his injury and should expect the green light to get back on court within the next day or so.

The first quarter set the tempo for the game as the Slingers built a ten-point lead over the Darwin team, finishing 23-13 up at the first break. Ben Knight again stepped up and displayed his star qualities by shooting 85% from the floor and collecting 25 points for the game.

The second term saw the Slingers lock down further on defence, only giving up eight points for the quarter. Second round NBA Draft pick Rod Grizzard is quickly establishing himself with the Slingers and had 14 points, shooting a perfect 100% from the floor.

There was no sign of letting up after the halftime break with contributions from new Slingers recruits Blagoj Jenev and John Fitzgerald, who each dropped 19 and 14 points respectively for the game. Janev showed he can step out and shoot the three, hitting nine of his point from range. By the final break the scoreline looked to be resembling a clinic, as the Slingers went to the bench with a commanding lead, 70-38.

Singaporean local Michael Wong stepped up and played valuable minutes again for the Slingers, scoring three points, whilst teammate and fellow Singaporean National Team member Koh Meng Koon hit a trio of threes and finished the game with 11 points.

Top scorer for the Darwin Airport Resort All-Stars was Tom Garlepp with 25 points.

"We have the experience and we played well on the court," said Slingers coach Gordie McLeod after the game. "Mike Helms is out with a groin injury but we'll see what happens in the next 24 hours. Our offence was better tonight. (The) Darwin team had little time together as a team but they are similar to us. They just need to spend more time together as a team. The competition is very wide open as for now."

Darwin's coach Don Sheppard was understandably disappointed with the loss.

"We did badly and we really trained well this morning," he said. "We weren't focused from the start. I disappointed the fans and the organisers and it won't happen again. Tom (Garlepp) was our best player and we are still in contention to be second and third in the standings. But it's a must win against Jordan All-Stars and I know we can bounce back."

The win puts the Slingers at 2-1 now with a legitimate chance of winning the Brunei Cup.

The Slingers now have a day off between Brunei Cup matches before playing RP Harbour Centre National Team.
