On Sunday, they face off as rivals.

Matt Burston and Simon Conn will meet in a clash of the titans this weekend, when the two South Dragons talls go head-to-head in Round 13 of BigV competition.

It’s a showdown of epic proportions, and one that is tipped to be a key factor in deciding the outcome of the game.

“When we played the Sabres earlier in the year Simon (Conn) took us apart, he was the difference between the two teams,” Falcons general manager Mike Bullock said.

“He had a lot of points and a lot of rebounds in that game and we didn’t have any big men on the court, we still had injuries to a few of our players.

“Now that Matt’s back on board and playing some good time I think it should be a great duel; if Matt can do the job on Conn, I think we’ll beat them.”

Since his return to the Waverley line-up mid-season, Burston has been quick to make an impact; with 16 points, 17 boards and one assist in the Falcons' win over Eltham last weekend, the big man is back.

“What he’s brought to the team is strength inside,” Bullock said.

“We have a team of very good outside shooters and by him being there, he draws the players in and gives our outside players a chance to shoot the ball, because with a lack of presence from the big men inside, the opposition has been able to cover our shooters pretty well.”

While both teams are already assured of a berth in next month’s playoffs, a win over Sandringham on Sunday is key to the Falcons’ finals campaign.

“We’ll definitely finish in the finals but this game is important to us because we want to try and get fourth spot,” Bullock said.

“It should be a great finals series and I think between Sandringham, Dandenong, Melbourne and ourselves, any of us could take it out, it’s just going to be a matter of who plays well on the night.

“We always have a good game against Sandringham and with both of us having South Dragons players on the court, it should be a great game.”
