The Crazy John’s South Dragons are one of just three NBL teams to have multiple players in the Boomers squad.

Burston received a late call-up to the national camp after veteran Chris Anstey withdrew from coming Boomers commitments, saying he was incapable of meeting the high physical demands of a training camp followed by an international tour and a three-test series.

Burston joins teammates Ingles and Holmes in vying for selection in the 12-man team to tour Europe later this month.

The full squad, announced late yesterday afternoon, includes David Andersen (CSKA Moscow), Ian Crosswhite (Sydney Kings), Adam Gibson (Brisbane Bullets), Wade Helliwell (Siena, Italy), Russell Hinder (Sydney Kings), Luke Kendall (Sydney Kings), Alex Loughton (Perth Wildcats), Sam Mackinnon (Brisbane Bullets), Darnell Mee (Cairns Taipans), Brad Newley (Houston Rockets, USA), Damien Ryan (Perth Wildcats), Glen Saville (Sydney Kings), Luke Schenscher (Portland Trailblazers, USA), Jason Smith (Sydney Kings) and Mark Worthington (Sydney Kings).

The 12 players selected to tour Europe will go on to contest the three-game FIBA Oceania qualifying series against New Zealand in August.

National head coach Brian Goorjian said the trans-Tasman showdown loomed as a massive challenge for the Boomers.

“New Zealand definitely has a few advantages over us that we’ll have to overcome to win this series,” he said.

“They have their best players available and they’re all comfortable with each other and somehow we’ll have to combat that.

“I’m excited about the challenge and I’m excited that I know the guys who will be at the camp really want to be there.”

Burston, Holmes and Ingles depart for the Gold Coast this morning.
