Ingles was today named to the 14-man Boomers squad set to tour Europe ahead of the FIBA Oceania qualifying series against New Zealand next month.

The tour will be Ingles’ first with the full senior squad, following his visit to China with a more experimental Boomers line-up last month.

His selection to the team follows a rigorous eight-day training camp on the Gold Coast, where Ingles battled it out with some of the biggest names in Australian basketball for a berth in the squad.

“We trained twice a day, once in the morning and then again in the afternoon,” he said.

“Between that we could pretty much do whatever we wanted but everyone was so tired that we didn’t really do too much.”

Ingles’ naming to the team is just the latest milestone in a career already studded with achievements beyond his years.

“Obviously that first trip to China was awesome but it was a younger team and the guys who weren’t in the 21-man squad would have been stoked to get into the main group,” he said.

“I was already in that main group but being able to have a crack against the older guys at the Gold Coast and prove that I could play against them was great and it was pretty exciting to be named.

“I think for me and a couple of the other younger guys our roles will be to bring energy to the group and to come off the bench for however many minutes we play and to get up defensively and create some defensive ends.”

Ingles will embark on the Boomers' eight-game tour of Italy and Turkey with a view to furthering his understanding of the game and what it takes to crack the world stage.

“I just want to learn a whole lot, it’s my first tour with the main team so I’m just going to go over with the other young guys and get as much information as I can and learn a hell of a lot about international basketball,” he said.

“I’ll just be trying hard and learning a lot.”

The 19-year-old gun joins David Andersen (CSKA Moscow), Adam Gibson (Brisbane Bullets), Wade Helliwell (Siena, Italy), Luke Kendall (Sydney Kings), Sam Mackinnon (Brisbane Bullets), Darnell Mee (Cairns Taipans), Brad Newley (Houston Rockets - USA, Adelaide 36ers), Glen Saville (Sydney Kings), Jason Smith (Sydney Kings), Luke Schenscher (Portland Trailblazers, USA), Damien Ryan (Perth Wildcats), Mark Worthington (Sydney Kings) and Patrick Mills (Australian Institute of Sport) in the squad.

Crazy John’s South Dragons teammate Jacob Holmes has been named as a reserve, while Matt Burston missed selection to the team.

Despite the absence of key names Andrew Bogut, Chris Anstey, Matt Nielsen and CJ Bruton, Ingles knows the current team is one fearsome line-up.

“I think for the guys who have been selected in place of the guys that are out injured, they’ve shown that they want it and I’m sure that everyone will give it a fair crack and show that even though it would be great to have some of the guys that are missing, we don’t rely on them and we can get some wins over there,” he said.

The Boomers will use the tour of Europe as their key preparation for the all-important qualifying series against the Tall Blacks in August, for the right to play in Beijing.

“Obviously that’s why we’re going to Europe, we haven’t played much as a team,” Ingles said.

“The New Zealand squad is spending 29 days together before the three-game series without leaving each other and that’s what they think is important, but we’ve had a week of pretty solid training and now we’ve got a week to recover before our two and a half weeks overseas.

“Once the series comes around I’m sure we’ll have some pretty good form and be able to smash them.”

Ingles will return to Melbourne to join the Crazy John's South Dragons in their pre-season competition schedule. Details of all pre-season games will be announced later this week.
