The Rangers downed arch-rival Sandringham 116-88 at the weekend, to stitch up back-to-back titles in game two of the grand final series.

The home side hit the ground running at Dandenong Stadium, with solid contributions across the board seeing the Rangers out to the 28-point win.

Hobba kick-started the Rangers’ attack with three points early in the first term to launch a hard-fought quarter that had the home side out by just one point at the break, 22-21.

But the Rangers had not lost a game on their home turf all season and weren’t about to let one slip with the Championship in sight, outscoring the Sabres 30-21 in the second term to take a 10-point lead into the major break.

It was all Hobba after half time, dropping 11 points in the third term to set up the home side’s victory and shore up a deserved MVP performance.

Despite a valiant effort from Simon Conn (18 points, 10 rebounds, three assists) for the Sabres, it was the Rangers’ superior accuracy and impressive depth that saw the home side over the line; the Rangers shot at 49% from the field, 51% from the three-line and 77% from the free-throw line, well ahead of the Sabres at 38% from the field, 20% from the three-line and 73% from the stripe.

Add to those stats the Rangers’ 40 points off the bench to Sandringham’s 19 and it was the home side with all the manpower.

The Rangers must now prepare for this weekend’s ABA quarter-finals against SEABL South Conference winners the Bendigo Braves, who they face at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the Boomers have wrapped up their European tour with a 1-1 result in Turkey.

On the back of a stirring visit to the battlefields at Gallipoli, the Australian contingent took out a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the home side in Istanbul on Friday night, the first of two international friendlies ahead of the FIBA Oceania qualifying series next week.

South Australia’s Brad Newley top-scored for the Boomers with 21 points, while young gun Patrick Mills added 17 of his own in another impressive display.

A slow start by the Boomers saw Turkey out an 11-0 lead, but the visitors stormed back into the game to trail by just four points at the end of the first quarter, 23-27.

The tense battle continued through the second and third terms, with the scores all tied at 75-apiece going into the final quarter.

A huge effort from Mills and a well-timed dunk to Sam Mackinnon in the final quarter secured the Boomers’ 101-93 win.

But the tables were turned the following night, as the Turks outran the Boomers 85-63 in the final outing of their eight-game European campaign.

Crazy John’s South Dragons gun Joe Ingles contributed three points for the night, but the Boomers had no answers to the Turkish attack.

Australia again started slowly but this time failed to bounce back, trailing by 12 points at the first break, 25-13.

It was a more even contest in the second quarter but Turkey added a further five points to take a 17-point advantage into the main break, 48-31.

The Boomers upped the defensive ante in the third period and restricted the Turks to just 17 points, but in scoring only 14 of their own, the effort was wasted as the lead ballooned to 20 points, 65-45.

“They manhandled us,” Australian coach Brian Goorjian said.

“They are big and strong and they used it to their advantage tonight.

“Points were hard to come by and we had difficulty getting freed up, but on a positive note we finished well.

"We had two bad halves on this entire trip and unfortunately one of those was in the first half of this game.

“We face New Zealand in one week and we know what we have to do to win and the things we need to stay away from, so bring it on.”

Ingles and the Boomers arrive home in Australia tonight ahead of the three-game qualifying series against the Tall Blacks next week.
