Andrew Bogut, who went at number one in last year's NBA draft and is an Essendon supporter, heard Sheedy's remarks and had this message for the veteran coach.

"Basketball is played all around the world, it's probably the number two sport in the world behind soccer, it can't be too crap if every country is playing it," Bogut said.

Despite playing for the Milwaukee Bucks in the USA, Bogut continued to follow the AFL and has strong feelings on the possession-style of play that Richmond used to beat Adelaide by three points.

"I think a lot of teams are going to adopt that style now because you can win like that. It's ugly but if you can get the win and get in the grand final then the fans are going to be happy."

Boomers coach Brian Goorjian complimented Richmond coach Terry Wallace on employing the 'keepings off' tactics.

"I really enjoyed that game," the veteran coach said.

"(When) you are in a situation where you are undermanned and you control the tempo of the ball, keep possession of the ball, have less kicks at goals, keep the game close and you have a chance to win."

"We were doing that in basketball, back when I played, when you didn't have a 30-second clock the team would go into four corners and that was similar to what Richmond did," he said.

Goorjian predicted that AFL would become more and more like basketball with initiatives like the half court line and shot clocks already making their presence felt on the football field.

"I think that Australian Rules football, over the course of time, is going to have to change its rules," he said.

"You know, we've done that in basketball and the clock, the half court line, more points for deeper shots, all those things are going to come to footy."
