Division One MenGame of the Week
Whittlesea (5-6) vs Sunbury (7-6)
Saturday 8:30pm at Mill Park
While a couple of sides will likely play finals this season in this division with losing records, the fact is that this is not how any team wants to come into finals. In the case of both of these sides it is a scenario that confronts them. Whittlesea currently hold down eighth spot with a 5-6 record, while Sunbury are just above the 50% mark in sixth with 7-6 beside their name.
Two key players appear to us to be important here if Whittlesea are to get the win. One is Estcourt, who has provided plenty of scoring for the home side since joining them a few rounds back. The other is Urbanic, who started the season as a dominant performer, then had something of a slump, before bouncing back against Bulleen with another big game. If these two stand up, and if Sunbury are still without Mychal, then both of these sides might be on 50% at the close of the weekend.
Coburg (1-11) vs Altona (8-5)
Saturday 6:00pm at Coburg
As much as there is a strong rivalry between these two clubs we don't think it will provide enough impetus for Coburg to spring an upset. Altona Coach Mick Downie is searching for consistency, and this is a great chance to get things in order.
Melbourne University (4-8) vs Southern Peninsula (6-7)
Saturday 7:00pm at MU
MU's finals chances are desperately thin but they will improve if they keep springing upsets like they did last round against Sherbrooke. Southern Peninsula present another target, and they'll want to take them on.
Chelsea (5-8) vs Bulleen (9-3)
Saturday 7:00pm at Chelsea
Things keep slipping away for Chelsea, who lost again last round against Shepparton - Bulleen look too good and have plenty of motivation to stay as a top two side.
Shepparton (4-9) vs Keilor (12-1)
Saturday 7:30pm at Wanganui
We've commented a few times that the Thunder seem to be one of the few sides in the competition capable of performing consistently. They'll be hoping the break has not disturbed their momentum.
Hawthorn (8-5) vs Blackburn (5-8)
Saturday 8:00pm at Xavier
The Magic are around the mark with three other teams sharing an 8-5 record. A loss here would be a big blow, as both of those other teams have winnable games this weekend against Coburg.
Sherbrooke (8-5) vs Coburg (1-11)
Sunday 3:00pm at Monbulk
The Suns will be mighty grumpy after losing in round 10 to MU and might well make Coburg pay here - especially if they break has helped out their notoriously long injury list.
Bulleen (9-3) vs Shepparton (4-9)
Sunday 3:00pm at Templestowe
Both these sides play Saturday so the Boomers get no special advantage against the travelling Gators, who play both of the top two sides in the one weekend.
Division One Women
Game of the Week
Diamond Valley (7-6) vs Sunbury (6-5)
Saturday 6:00pm at Diamond Valley
While Warrnambool and Shepparton look comfortable in this division, four teams are set to contest the other two finals places - Werribee, Blackburn and the two combatants here all it appears having legitimate claims, and the next few weeks will be very telling.
As will this match-up. They've already encountered each other twice this season, with DV claiming the first encounter and Sunbury the second. The winner here stays in fourth place at worst over the weekend. The winner picks up head to head advantage in the run into finals. A very big contest looming at DV, and home court might be equally important.
Shepparton (8-4) vs LTU (1-10)
Saturday 5:30pm at Wanganui
The Gators should be untroubled here in moving to a 9-4 record. LTU scoring at under 50 points per game will need to find something very special in offence if they are to swing an upset on the road.
Warrnambool (12-0) vs Werribee (7-5)
Saturday 6:00pm at Warrnambool
The Mermaids have handed two thumping losses to Werribee already this season, but to be fair, the She-Devils form is much better at the moment. It is still a huge ask, but expect a closer contest.
Whittlesea (3-9) vs Blackburn (6-6)
Sunday 12:00pm at Mill Park
This game has been moved from Saturday which should have little impact on either side - the Vikings needing to win to take advantage of any slip from either of the two sides above them.
Sunbury (6-5) vs Melbourne University (3-8)
Sunday 1:00pm at Sunbury
A big weekend for the Jets with two "winnable" games that would propel them potentially into third place if they can get both. MU have been consistently competitive, and would like to finish the season by providing some grief to the higher placed sides.
