While soccer is enjoying tremendous publicity thanks to the Socceroos' performance at the World Cup, the sport of basketball is struggling to capture the hearts and minds of the Australian sporting public.

And Australian NBA star Andrew Bogut believes it will take more than a world title for the Boomers to return the sport to the glory days of the early 1990s.

The 2005 No.1 NBA draft pick believes on-court success by the Boomers needs to be backed up by some astute planning and marketing by Basketball Australia and free-to-air television coverage of the sport.

Bogut, who is in camp with the Boombers in Canberra in preparation for August's world championships in Japan, said the NBL needed to get its matches shown on free-to-air television.

"If Australia wins the gold medal this world championships it still won't do that much," Bogut told AAP.

"The change is not going to happen overnight, it has to be a five to 10 years process with the NBL."

"Hopefully the stocks will improve with some national team success, a couple more guys playing in the States and the NBL expansion into Singapore."

"Even if we have to pay for free to air television, that is a smart thing to do."

"If we do that successfully there is no reason why we cannot be a top sport in Australia in five or 10 years."

NBL commissioner Rick Burton believes Australia's performance at the World Cup has opened the nation's sporting public's eyes to truly global sports.

"Anything that challenges the traditional hierarchy of sports in Australia can have substantial benefits for basketball," said Burton.

"The Australian public are having their eyes opened to just how truly global sports other than cricket, AFL, rugby league and union are."

"I think we'll start to see a shift in the Australian sporting landscape over the next few years as a direct result of the Socceroos efforts and I believe we are set to reap some of the benefits from that seismic change."
