Kelly, who was the ’96 NBL Grand Final MVP and played five seasons of his 13-year NBL career in Victoria, will partake in the interview process with Dragon’s management within the next few weeks.

“We’re concluding the search phase both here and overseas, in terms of identifying prospective coaches and we’re just about to begin the interviewing process,” said Dragon’s chairman Mark Cowan today.

“The search process isolated candidates who showed vision and integrity and Mike was an obvious stand out in the group.”

“Mike’s got a great feel for the game that stems from his playing experience,” said Brendan Joyce, the Wollongong Hawks Head Coach.

“I’ve seen Mike develop from a player who understands what it takes to make the individual better, to someone who can control twelve players.”

Melbourne Tigers legend Andrew Gaze believes Kelly is an outstanding contender for a coaching role with the South Dragons. “Mike’s renowned throughout the league for his work ethic and basketball intellect,” said Gaze.

“Above those skills he’s also fiercely competitive and when you consider his experience within the league he makes for an excellent coaching option.”

The Dragons expect to confirm the coaching roster by mid-February.

“Our original aim is unchanged in that we are looking to hire the best coach possible,” added Dragons co-owner Mark Cowan today.

“Mike’s proud history within the Victorian basketball community was an important consideration in progressing negotiations to the interview phase.”
