Last seen roaming courtside at the Boomers game on Wednesday, Warren 'The Volcano' Bromo has been personally invited by Dragons Captain Shane Heal to be a roving commentator come the Dragons regular season.

Marking the start of a regular contribution from Wazza, he gives us a personal insight into the Boomers game, and the invitation to appear at Vodafone Arena for the Dragons.

When Basketball Australia invited me cordially, which I must say confused me a little as I had no idea what ‘cordially’ meant, to the Australia v New Zealand game I was absolutely rapt like a present. The last time I was invited to something official it was the King Island Creams (basketball team) official team of the century dinner which was held out the back of my Uncle Doug’s house in a disused chook shed. Despite no other nominees I was shocked that night to have been voted the player of the century and to have witnessed my Uncle Doug lay an egg but let me be the first to tell you I was equally stunned last night to have been so warmly welcomed by the fans at Vodafone arena. For the record I think that ‘fone’ should have a ‘h’ in it thus Vodafhone arena, anyway back to last nights festivities.

It was a great game to watch up close and personal especially given the fact that I was given some responsibility by the court side announcer who asked me to ‘work the crowd’. Once again I wasn’t sure what that meant and after ten minutes of trying to persuade a couple of ten year olds to pick up litter I decided it best to create what I like to call the ‘human seagull effect’ Now I first became aware of the human seagull effect when I was being babysat by my mothers cousins best friends aunties hairdresser Doris. She would bring out the hot chips all cozy in their little polystyrene house for breakfast and dangle them above my head whilst encouraging me to squawk if I wanted one. At the time I also had a broken leg thus I was forced to hop around at which time Doris would say ‘Dance little seagull dance for your chips’. Looking back it wasn’t the best way to encourage healthy eating habits or mental stability. To this day I have paid the price with a very real phobia of interpretive dance.

Anyway back to the game. Sadly for the Aussie Boomers they lost, to a team which must be said was simply better on the night. The Tall Blacks actually won the series on points which again confused me because the series was best of four and both teams won two games apiece. I guess if you carry the one and divide by the sign of Tan you reach the formula that saw those wool watchers walk away with the Ramsey Shield. Personally I walked away with a rather large smile and an invitation from Shane Heal, who is the captain of NBL newcomer the South Dragons, to attend Dragons games during the upcoming season…now that’s awesome. I can’t wait to tell everyone back on King Island about my night at the ‘ball’ as they call it in the big smoke. Looks like I’m going to have to make at least three phone calls - make that two as I forgot that the phone company took Uncle Doug’s away because he kept pecking the cabling.
