Australian Boomers coach Brian Goorjian has tried to take the pressure off his players by telling told no-one expects them to do any good and to "free their minds" before the World Championship in Japan this month.

Australia's world titles campaign has been gutted by injuries to key players and an embarrassing loss to New Zealand in the recent four-match series in Australia, and no-one is giving the team much hope of a good result in Japan.

"Everyone in the country thinks we're a pile," Goorjian told AAP.

"Everyone's saying this is the worst basketball team Australia has put on the floor and we're an embarrassment."

But Goorjian still hopes his young can make an impression at the titles by lifting the pressure off them.

With Chris Anstey, Matt Nielsen, David Andersen and Glen Saville missing from the Boomers squad youngsters such as David Barlow (22), Brad Newley (21) and Aaron Bruce (21) are virtually assured of making their major competition debuts alongside Andrew Bogut, Jason Smith and Sam Mackinnon.

Goorjian has likened the current situation to the 1998 Olympics where virtual unknowns Luc Longley, Mark Bradtke and Andrew Vlahov carried the country's hopes and went onto become legends in the sport in Australia.

"I'm telling them (the players) to free their minds, play real hard and maybe we'll do something special and somebody will notice us," Goorjian said.

The Boomers will be strengthened by the inclusion of CJ Bruton to the back court which should give more direction to Australia's play and they can also put things into perspective with the New Zealanders performing well in their pre-Championships warm-up tournament currently being played in Argentina.

The Tall Blacks narrowly went down to world powerhouse Brazil in the opening match 83-79 before inflicting a 100-70 point win over Venezuela in their second match.

Australia will get a better gauge of its form when it heads to China for its final warm-up tournament - the Boris Stankovic Cup beginning on August 8, which includes Brazil, France, China and Germany.

The Boomers then kick off their first match in the World Championships against Brazil in Hamamatsu, Japan on August 19.
