The hours are ticking down to the first on-court appearance of the National Basketball League’s newest franchise the South Dragons and, as a huge bonus, residents of the Eastern suburbs will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with the team this Thursday night at Knox City Shopping Centre.

Preparing for their first ever game, which will be played against the Cairns Taipans on Wednesday August 23 at Knox Converse Stadium, the Dragons will meet and greet fans at Knox City this Thursday night from 6pm.

Hundreds of hoops fans are expected to welcome the Dragons and enjoy an autograph session, along with interviews with players and the coaching staff, while tickets to the Dragons and Taipans game will also be available.

Knox Basketball’s Marketing & Communications Manager, Justin Nelson, is urging all basketball fans to be a part of history during the next week and join in as the Dragons take their very first steps as an NBL team.

“It’s and exciting time for basketball, especially in the Eastern region where the game thrives like no other place in Australia,” said Nelson, adding, “South Dragons have done a wonderful job in promoting basketball and everyone at Knox is proud to play a part in this historical occasion.

The game against Cairns has received extensive coverage in the media and is attracting interest from fans in country Victoria, and even Interstate.

“I’m guessing there will only be a minimal number of tickets available come game night, such has been the huge demand from the public to see the Dragons play in their very first game. We are no longer surprised each day when we get calls for tickets from fans in Geelong, Traralgon or Shepparton,” said Nelson.

“I spoke with Cairns Taipans captain Anthony Stewart on the weekend and he was amazed to hear two-and-half thousand people will be at Knox Converse Stadium on August 23.

“Anthony’s a veteran of the NBL and was very supportive of the marketing the Dragons have done in recent months. I guess he’s like all of us and can’t wait to be a part of something new and exciting, even if he is playing for the opposition.”
