Former Brisbane Bullet and Australian guard Stephen Black has agreed to terms with the Cairns Taipans and will play with the club for the next two seasons subject to ratification of his contract by the NBL.

Black played in the 2006/07 premiership-winning Bullets side but his first taste of championship success came in 2000 with the Perth Wildcats under current Taipans coach Alan Black.

Stephen Black said he was looking forward to teaming up with the Taipans.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to come to Cairns and be a part of a fantastic group of players and equally impressive off-court team."

"The Taipans have given my self and my fiancé the best opportunity to be happy and successful and I hope to help an already emerging club take the next step."

Alan Black also believes the signing will be a boon for the Taipans' stable.

“I am very excited about having Stephen play for the Taipans.

"Since his Perth days he has developed into an outstanding player adding a new dimension to his game each year."

"The lure of the dollar in Europe was tempting however he is looking to be closer to his family and he is impressed with the Taipans management and the team that we are putting together."

"He has long been a fan of Darnell Mee and Martin Cattalini and played with Gary Boodnikoff in his early days in Sydney."

"He adds a scoring punch that compliments Cat and Larry and with Darnell we will have one of the most active backcourts in the League"

According to Taipans General Manager Denis Keeffe, the signing was a major part of the clubs recruiting plans for next season.

“With the signing of Black I believe we now have one of the best backcourt lineups in the league," Keeffe said.

"Black is one of the best guards in the country and he showed that with his outstanding finals series last year."

"He can hit from the outside consistently, is a big game player with two championships under his belt and can create scoring opportunities for our inside big men in Cattalini, Abney, Smith and Jawai."

"We have said all along after last season that we are putting together a team capable of challenging for the championship and Black's signing is further proof of that.”
