A packed Knox stadium witnessed the South Dragons first ever game last night, as Victoria’s newest NBL team took on the Cairns Taipans to begin their pre-season campaign.

The Taipans took the win 115-104, with Martin Cattalini leading all scorers with 33. Import Todd Fuller scored the first ever Dragons basket, and lead the team with 26 points.

Commonwealth game gold medallist Jacob Holmes had 18 points and eight rebounds, and captain Shane Heal finished with 11 points and five assists.

Coach Mark Price gave every squad member minutes, with development players Brent Hobba and Ash Cannan impressive on debut.

Ash Cannan didn’t miss a shot and finished with 14 points in ten minutes and Dandenong teammate Brent Hobba was solid with eight rebounds and six points.

AIS graduate Joe Ingles showed poise beyond his years, finishing with 15 points and three assists.

The Dragons next pre-season game is against the Wollongong Hawks at MSAC on Saturday the 2nd of September, tip-off 7:30PM. Tickets are available by calling 9690 6600 or emailing feedback@southdragons.com.
