The Boomers have set-up a likely second-round clash with the all-powerful United States team with a comfortable 93-46 win in their final pool game of the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan.

The Aussies needed to break their three-game losing streak to stay alive, and did it easily in the end with Mark Worthington top-scoring with 17 points.

Jason Smith added 16 points and Andrew Bogut and Sam Mackinnon, 10 each, as the Boomers overcame a slow start to prevail by 47 points. Saad Abdulraham Ali scored 16 points to lead Qatar.

Australia only needs Lithuania to defeat Brazil in their pool match to ensure a match up against the American team, which features NBA stars Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, in the round of 16. Should the South Americans prevail, then the Australians could be headed home depending on points difference.

Qatar kept pace early in the match, and the Boomers only had an 11-point lead, 41-30, at half-time. But Bogut cut loose in the third term, the Australians scoring 25 points, while restricted Qatar to just four.

With a commanding advantage coming into the final term, Brian Goorjian chose to rotate his bench, with every Australian player getting on the scoreboard.
