The Townsville Crocodiles are backing the bold push for the unification of basketball unveiled earlier this week, Josh Alston of the Townsville Bulletin reports.

A review of the sport initiated by its key stakeholders is set to be conducted in the coming months and could change the face of basketball, including the structure of the NBL.

Townsville Crocodiles Chief Executive Ian Smythe firmly backed the move according to Alston.

"We're very, very supportive of the review, we see it as a very positive thing for basketball," he said.

"It's probably long overdue in terms of basketball development in Australia."

Smythe said the review could lead to significant advances for the sport.

"I think Townsville has always been good in terms of working with its local associations, I think the Fire and the Crocs have worked closely with Townsville Basketball so we may not see significant changes locally," he said.

"But certainly across the country I think it's going to open up pathways for kids all the way through and we couldn't be more supportive of the whole process."

Smythe said the Crocs were excited to see what would come out of the independent review.

"Certainly we will see that it is an important process if basketball is going to continue to grow and develop in the country," he said.

"The NBL is a very successful organisation and has a very strong infrastructure and it has been going through a period of growth.

"It will be interesting to see what direction comes out of that but certainly I would suggest that we're going to see some very, very close ties between the NBL and Basketball Australia."

Smythe believed that the second-tier ABA could also see major benefits from the review.

"I don't think it's far off that now to be quite honest, if you look around the ABA now a lot of players who come off the bench in the NBL play in the ABA," Smythe said.

"I think what it will do it is (strengthen) the relationship between the seasons and the relationship between the organisations has the potential to improve dramatically."
