Brad Newley won’t be holding his breath or chewing his nails tomorrow when the NBA Draft is televised globally on the ESPN television network, according to Boti Nagy of The Advertiser.

Newley, Adelaide’s 199cm off-guard is a winner either way. Whether he is drafted, gets a shot at Europe or is finally suiting in the NBL with the 36ers.

"I'm in a winning situation," he said after spending 30 hours flying home to Adelaide from his various pro try-outs. "Whether I'm playing in the States or with Adelaide at long last - or maybe even Europe - it's a winner for me."

With the top 30 draftees receiving guaranteed contracts, Newley is confident he has done better than at last year’s work-outs.

"They keep their cards close to their chests," he said of dealing with the NBA clubs.

"I've done all I can.

"I don't know if I did well enough to get in the top 30, that's up to them."

Draft picks at 59 (Phoenix) or 60 (Dallas) or staying undrafted are the shots that most critics have Newley going after.

"I handled it a helluva lot better than last year," he said. "You just know the ins-and-outs of a work-out and what to expect."

“Meeting” the one and only Michael Jordan was what Newley did not expect. "He works for Charlotte Bobcats now," Newley said of Jordan who he saw at one his work-outs.

"He walked in front of me at one point and . . . that's about it."

Pat Riley and Phil Jackson, two of the NBA’s future Hall of Fame coaches, were able to give helpful words of wisdom to Newley. The latter coached Shaquille O'Neal and Dwyane Wade at Miami to the championship last year and previously coached greats such as Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Bob McAdoo, James Worthy and Byron Scott.

Jackson led O'Neal and Kobe Bryant to championships at Los Angeles and before that won six NBA crowns with Chicago Bulls teams led by Jordan, Scottie Pippen and three featuring Luc longley and Dennis Rodman.

"I got to meet Pat Riley at Miami and he wished me luck," Newley said. "Phil Jackson helped run one of the try-outs working on the triangle offence and that was pretty amazing."
