Adelaide 36ers head coach Phil Smyth has told The Advertiser newspaper that the club isn't rushing to sign a replacement for Brad Newley despite the young star having been selected in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets last week.

Newley was taken with the 54th overall selection by the Rockets but Smyth told The Advertiser's Boti Nagy that it was too early to tell if the South Australian would earn a roster spot in the NBA next season.

"At this stage we're all still on a high for Brad," Smyth said. "And Brad's still on a high. But the reality is at this point we don't know what it will actually mean."

"Brad doesn't know. Will he make their roster? Will they suggest he spend some time in the D-League, or Europe, or back in the NBL?"

"Brad and his agent will be talking with Houston. But right now we're not pursuing anyone to replace Brad."

"It's still very much a 'let's wait and see' situation. We always knew there was a strong possibility of this happening before we put the team together."

"Brad was always the icing on the cake - not necessarily the cake."

Smyth said that his team would miss Newley if he went to 'The Show' but that it was important to avoid knee-jerk reactions.

"Obviously we're a better side with Brad in it but we're not going to rush off and sign someone," Smyth said.

"We'll wait and see what happens and make an educated decision."
