Coach Sam Mitchell has said he is yet to decide if the Italian will start or come off the bench this season, and has challenged Bargnani to make his claim during the Raptors' pre-season preparations.

"We're not going to rush him but if he's ready to play, we're going to play him," Mitchell told the Toronto Star.

"He's got the right like every other player on the roster to earn minutes. Or to earn a starting job for that matter."

The 7ft Bargnani nevertheless faces a tall order to start at his natural position of power forward, which is the domain of Team USA star Chris Bosh.

The Raptors open their regular-season schedule in New Jersey on November 1.
