A two-time Olympic basketball gold medalist with Team USA and NCAA Tournament winner with North Carolina, Jordan shot to international fame with the Chicago Bulls by leading the team to six NBA crowns.

He has now joined the committee behind Chicago's ambitious plans to host the 2016 Games.

Chicago is competing against Los Angeles and San Francisco for the right to be the United States' bid city.

Although his numerous business commitments mean Jordan will not be able to play a full role, Chicago 2016 chairman Patrick Ryan has insisted his role is more than symbolic.

"We look at his identity as a great Olympian, a great champion and a person who means a lot to a many people around the world," Ryan said in the Chicago Tribune.

"He won't be able to attend a lot of meetings, but for special needs, we would call on him to support us. His role will evolve over time.''
