The Youth Select teams is drawn from the league's Youth League competitions and the BigV Board imposed an internal ruling that all members of the team must be 23 or Under. An additional caveat stated that the players must have played enough Youth League games to have qualified for finals in 2006 - ruling out a number of players who played both YL and competed in ABA competition.

Youth League 1 Men Coach of the Year and Championship Coach Kent Lockhart was asked by the BigV to mentor the side, assisted by YL2 Coach of the Year John Dunlop. They will be joined by Peter Reece of Frankston, acting as a team manager.

Over 20 players were invited to try-outs over two weekends at the Waverley stadium, a list that was impacted with a large number of Youth League players heading off the US for the College basketball season.

League CEO Matthew Cowling said the team was announced on Sunday after the final try-out session. He said the league was particularly please with the number of YL2 players selected in the squad.

"The majority of the players invited to try-out were YL1 players, but five of the 12 selected come from Youth League 2 clubs - and all five were major league award winners in season 2006"

"We think the International Cup is a great concept" he added. "The BigV was delighted to receive the invitation from the Knox Association and the guys are really looking forward to the opportunity".
