Australian star Andrew Bogut has starred in Milwaukee's 105-97 victory over Detroit, while a double-double from LeBron James has helped the Cleveland Cavaliers open its NBA campaign with a 97-94 win over the Washington Wizards.

Bogut scored 16 points and collected nine rebounds as the Bucks started their season on a winning note.

The Australian provided a good foil for Michael Redd, whose 37-point haul was a match-high, while for the Pistons Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton both netted 25.

James nailed 26 points and collected 10 boards as the Cavs defeated a persistent Wizards outfit, which levelled the scores at 89-89 after trailing by eight points with 6:36 remaining.

With the match up for grabs in the dying seconds, James made a clutch rebound off a Gilbert Arenas three-point attempt to help the Cavs hold on for victory.

Larry Hughes, who missed 46 games last season due to a badly broken finger, scored a game-high 27 points for the victors, while Drew Gooden picked up 11 boards with his 14 points.

For the Wizards, Caron Butler scored 23 points and Antawn Jamison netted 20.

Philadelphia defeated Atlanta 88-75 on the back of a 29-14 opening term, Indiana outlasted Charlotte in the second half to win 106-99 and Orlando brought Chicago back down to earth with a 109-94 triumph.

New Orleans overcame a second-half revival by Boston to scrape home 91-87, New Jersey kicked away from Toronto in the last quarter to win 102-92, while the New York Knicks defeated Memphis 118-117 in triple overtime.

A 28-17 final term enabled Minnesota to account for Sacramento 92-83, Utah set up its 107-97 victory over Houston in the first half, and Portland knocked off Seattle 110-106 despite trailing at every change.

In other results, the LA Clippers were downed 104-112 by Phoenix and the Lakers defeated northern rival Golden State 110-98.
