From where I sat I’ve taken in a lot of basketball! After supporting the Dragons during their November 22nd win over the West Sydney Razorbacks at Vodafone arena I decided to follow the bouncing ball north and witnessed first hand the narrow win the Dragons had over the Razorbacks just two nights later (+1 point). The game which was held at Sydney Olympic park highlighted the need to maintain a constant acceleration as the Dragons held a commanding half time lead which was simply squandered in the second half thanks to a spirited opposition and less than focused efforts. Bottom line however was a ‘w’ which brings the franchise one step closer to .500.

It was obvious from the intense nature of the game that new Razorbacks coach Cal ‘the black pearl’ Bruton is feeling the strain of leading such a young team. I am sure that there would be similar feelings for Shane Heal as he continues to practice and implement ‘his’ vision of team basketball on and off court. It is interesting to note that Cal Bruton was the last player coach in the NBL many moons ago.

Following my jaunt to Sydney I flew on to South Australia to lay eyes on the 2006 NBL All-Star game which was generously sponsored by both Philips and Virgin Blue. I mention both sponsors as they provided all with incentive to attend. Many fans received ‘freebees’ just for showing up and I’m not taking about low end ‘junk’ but rather mini stereos and electric razors while the players themselves were promised individual roundtrips to any destination in Australia courtesy Virgin Blue. With the ante-uped both teams played for keeps with the last quarter showcasing some entertaining play makers and their natural abilities. From a Dragons view point Joe Ingles did very well against more seasoned campaigners whilst it was disappointing to see Rosell Ellis omitted from the dunk competition due to a hand injury. I hope Rosell is able to participate in next year’s contest as he would have provided some fierce opposition. Carlos Powell from the New Zealand Breakers eventually won over the untouchable home town favorite Willie Farley (a bad word or joke could not be made of the man before his home crowd)

The All Star game ended in a three point win to the World All Stars who deservedly walked away with the silverware and game MVP honors which went the way of who fell just 1 assist shy of a triple double. All in all the All Star game showcased the sport and provided for a great spectacle. I would imagine I would be excused for taking a basketball break but I will not as the Dragons take on the Perth Wildcats at Vodafone on the 30th of November in what will be a season defining game. I for one will be there will bells on and not just to cheer on Jingles!
