Mildura Mavericks membership status for 2007
18/01/2007
The SEABL would like to formally announce that following due process, the league's board has suspended the membership of the Mildura Mavericks for 2007.
This important decision did not come without a professional and detailed examination of Mildura's entire program, including current off-court operations and financials, plus their potential to remain a financial member of the league.
Under the Constitution, Mildura had the option to appeal this decision within 14 days, however no appeal was received.
The SEABL board and staff have worked closely with Mildura to assist where possible, however it was agreed that the situation could potentially further impact on the league if the decision was deferred.
On behalf of SEABL, Chairman Hugh McMenamin thanked the people of Mildura for their support of the Mavericks during a long-standing association with the league, but stressed it was important the board acted in the best interest of the competition at large.
"It's an unfortunate situation and it must be said that the league will miss having the Mavericks, but we regard the off-court structure and foundations at all clubs as vital attributes to help ensure self sufficiency and viability," said McMenamin.
"We followed due process with the Mavericks and were unable to find a clear pathway forward from their current position. This decision was not made lightly, however it still provides Mildura with the option of returning to the league for season 2008 and beyond."
With the confirmation of Mildura's exit comes the news that a re-drafted fixture is close to being finalised and is expected to be released within days.
Meanwhile, Southern Districts have joined the league in both the men's and women's competitions, ensuring the league will showcase two men's conferences with seven teams each, while the women's competition jumps to 10 teams.
The SEABL season commences on Saturday March 4.
