The Crazy John’s South Dragons may have lost their weekend showdown with defending champions the Brisbane Bullets, but the form of import guard Cortez Groves has the team optimistic about the road ahead.
While the Dragons were left heartbroken by the one-point loss on Saturday night, Groves’ show-stopping performance is a sure sign the club’s first win of the season is just around the corner.
With the star import now back in action - and wreaking havoc on the scoreboard – the Dragons will look to the next few games to make their mark on the winners’ list.
“We know we’ve got some talent, we know that we’re going to have a chance to be a good team, but right now you either win or lose and we didn’t come up and make the big plays at the end of the game when you have to, against a team that’s had success and knows how to win,” Heal said on Saturday night.
“We’re going to take experience from (the loss) but at the end of the day, experience doesn’t get you wins and we want that right now.”
The Dragons next meet the New Zealand Breakers this Sunday, October 28 at Vodafone Arena before taking on the Hawks, Crocodiles and new NBL franchise the Gold Coast Blaze.
“We’ve got a stretch now that we’ve got to start winning, and we can win,” Heal said.
The form of Groves was one of the most significant positive outcomes of the game on Saturday night, and sets the team in good stead for the month ahead.
“I guess when we recruited Tez we knew what he could do offensively and that performance tonight is exactly what we’ve missed over the last three games,” Heal said.
“He virtually carried us offensively (tonight) and it was an unbelievable performance; I guess for people questioning whether we’ve got the right Americans or not, that was probably a step in the right direction to say we feel like Cortez is one of the best players in the league and, offensively, I’m sure there’s going to be more performances like that.”
The Crazy John’s South Dragons have today hit the road as part of the club’s ‘Back to the ‘Burbs’ community program, travelling to Eltham High School for an open skills session with junior fans. Click HERE for event details.
