Saturday’s come-from-behind win over the Melbourne Tigers was yet another chapter in the amazing story of this season’s Crazy John’s South Dragons.

Mark Worthington was the standout performer with 24 points and eight rebounds, but six Dragons also scored in double figures. The team effort culminated in a 24-7 run to end the game, as the Dragons won the second Derby, 107-98.

Here’s a brief snapshot of each Dragon’s Derby performance:

Adam Gibson: One of the seven Dragons to reach double figures, Gibbo scored 12 points, including two huge three’s in the second half. His relentless “D’ and ball-handling against the Tigers’ pressure was once again critical to the team’s success.

Nathan Herbert: The former Development Player became a Derby hero with his brilliant fourth quarter shooting. With the Dragons down by ten, Herbert nailed three from long range, on the way to 15 points for the game.

Daniel Dillon: With Mika Vukona out with a hip complaint and the club an import down, it was Development Player Daniel Dillon who suited up to fill the void. Playing close to ten minutes, Dillon hit a big three-pointer in the first half and played solid defence.

Joe Ingles: Ingles may not have racked up 20-plus points, but he got it done in other areas. In less than 30 minutes of court-time, Ingles scored ten points, led all players in assists with six and had four steals.

Tremmell Darden: In one of this best efforts of the season, Darden scored 15 points and played superb defence all night. He also threw down another big dunk and hit an important three late in the game that brought the lead back from five to two.

Rhys Carter: Although Rhys didn’t display his customary hot shooting, he was instrumental in a couple of big plays, including a sweet assist on Tremmell’s dunk. In only 15 minutes on the floor, Carter had five points, two rebounds and two assists.

Matt Burston: Another player to reach double digits in scoring, Burston had 12 points and was 8/8 from the free throw line. He was just three boards shy of yet another double-double, and his big shot late in the fourth tied the score at 93, setting the stage for Wortho’s heroics.

Mark Worthington: The captain led from the front with 24 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. He scored nine of the team’s first eleven points, but it was at the end where he really stepped up. His pull-up trey in the final term gave the Dragons the lead for the first time since the end of the first quarter.

Nick Horvath: Going into a game knowing you’re going to be matched up against Chris Anstey is never an easy thought, but Nick combined with fellow tall Matt Burston to curtail the superstar’s influence. In less than 20 minutes of court time, Horvath had 11 points, six rebounds, one block and one rim-rattling dunk.
