Fresh from a return visit to Adelaide this month, Joe Ingles has arrived back in Melbourne to begin preparations for a tilt at his first senior national side.
The NBL Rookie of the Year took time out this week to reflect on his debut season and look ahead to his first Boomers camp.
Ingles knows he has made a dream start to his professional career at the South Dragons, but remains typically modest about his Olympic prospects.
“I have no idea what to expect, I'll go along to the first couple of camps and give it a fair crack and if I get picked for the tour to China in June and get the chance to play I'll just give it my all and see what comes out if it,” Ingles said.
“If I get that chance to go and play in the World Championships and the Olympics it would be a dream come true.”
Ingles is considered a strong chance to make his national debut in 2007 after a stellar year with the South Dragons, one the rookie himself admits came as a surprise.
“It was a bit surprising, I guess I was pretty happy with my season in the end and the Dragons were pretty happy with how I played as well,” Ingles said.
“All up it was a good experience and I couldn't really ask for a better start to my career.”
In part, Ingles credits that start to the influence of childhood idol and current coach, Shane Heal.
“Shane has been amazing for me trying to get to that next level, whether it's playing overseas somewhere or playing for the Boomers,” Ingles said.
“He knows what I need to do and will help me with that, I've got that much confidence in him that I know if I keep working with him and listening to him then I'll get to that next level.”
After all the hype surrounding Ingles in season 2006-‘07 – the young star was touted as a future Boomer and genuine NBA prospect almost from day one – it is perhaps the number seven himself who best sums up his current standing in the sport.
“I'm just a versatile guard who can play one, two and three. I'm quite long defensively and I can guard the one, two and three positions,” Ingles said.
“I still need to improve the strength of my body, getting my shot more consistent, having quicker feet in defence and knowing what the opposition can and can't do and shutting them down without a problem.”
Enough said.
