Ingles, a left-hander and arguably the most sought-after Australian under twenty, has been compared with NBA legend Toni Kukoc by Boomers coach Brian Goorjian.

“We understand Joe’s had contract offers from six NBL clubs and has attracted interest from a few more, so from that standpoint we’re excited to secure his services,” said Dragons co-owner Mark Cowan.

“I’m delighted that our first signing is a young kid with a huge future ahead of him.”

Ingles, who tinkered with cricket and AFL as a junior, played high school basketball with Brad Newley before an AIS call-up in January 2005.

Representing South Australia in the National Championships for the last five years, Ingles is honoured to be the first signing for Victoria’s newest franchise.

“Whilst there’s an element of luck in my situation, I’m privileged to be the first signing for what I believe will become one of the great Australian franchises,” said Ingles.

“It’s difficult to explain, but I feel nobody will be able to take that away from me.”

The announcement of four-time NBA All-Star Mark Price as Dragons coach was a major factor in attracting Ingles’ signature.

“Mark is an NBA legend, and the consensus is that he’ll do great things for the Dragons program,” added Ingles.

“Assistant coach Scott Ninnis is a league veteran and the potential for learning at the Dragons presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Signing a two year deal with an option for a third, Ingles will see out his two-year AIS term and join the Dragons pre-season in early August.

“Joe’s a unique player for the Australian market and his development in the last three months of last year was phenomenal,” said AIS head coach Marty Clark. “He can shoot from range, play all positions and has a great knack for finding open players - he’s got all the tools to be a Boomer.”

Chatting with Dragons' assistant Scott Ninnis at Cowan’s house on Wednesday, Ingles casually knocked down ten three-pointers in succession – on one foot.

18-year-old Ingles broke a bone in his right foot a month ago and wears a protective boot to aid the healing process.

“He’s a great natural talent and with his size and shooting range is capable of some amazing things,” added Ninnis.

“When you consider that he’s a left-hander and super-athletic, you’re looking at a kid who will pose a real threat to the opposition over the next couple of years.”
