If Luke Martin’s recent form in the New Zealand NBL is anything to go by, the sharp-shooting guard will prove a lethal addition to the South Dragons’ new-look line-up.

In a huge week on court the former Taipan shot 92 points over four games, including a 30-point haul against fellow South Dragons recruit Nick Horvath.

The seven-day shooting spree was launched with 30 points, nine boards against Horvath’s Wellington Saints late last week and followed by a team-high 21 points on Friday, 18 points this Monday and 23 points last night.

“We dug a little hole for ourselves to start the season so this was a very important week for us, with four games from Thursday to Thursday and three of them on the road,” Martin said.

“We’ve had a couple of byes and we’ve really been working hard and beating each other up at training, so we were just happy to get out there and take it out on somebody else.

“I just wanted to play well and to help my team win.”

While Martin was quick to play down his stellar week, he was keen to talk up the form of Horvath, who with 15 points, five boards, also featured in the Saints’ seven-point win.

“(Nick’s) a handful, one of our main focal points going into the game was to try to limit his effectiveness but we couldn’t keep him down as much as we would have liked and they played well and came away with a win,” he said.

“He was over here last year and absolutely killed us and I’ve watched him in the Australian league for a couple of years now with West Sydney and Adelaide and he’s a talented guy, especially down in the low post and we found that out first-hand last week.

“I didn’t see too much of him thankfully, he’s a big boy and it hurts when you run into someone like him.”

But it’s Martin who’s really been making waves across the Tasman, earning team-high scoring honours in three of the week’s four games.

The dynamic point credits his form to a rigorous winter schedule aimed at maximising his impact at the Dragons next season.

“We train three to four times a week and, depending on the schedule, play once, twice or even four times.

“We have about a week off now before our next game so we’ll rest up for a little bit and then get back to work.

“Even though we ended the week at 3-1 and we came away with a win last night, it probably wasn’t one of our better performances as a team and it doesn’t sit too well with us so we’re back on the court tomorrow working hard towards next week.”

While Martin is enjoying every minute of his time with the Waikato Pistons, it’s the upcoming Australian NBL season that remains the major focus.

“I’m trying to get into the gym as much as possible to lift weights and get stronger and focus on my off-season training ahead of the Australian league, while trying to play well for my team over here and help us win some games.

“(The Australian season) is really not that far away, it’s only a couple of months until I have to be down there and I’m really looking forward to it.

“With the team that we seem to have assembled we could make a push to be in the upper echelon of the league.”

And while Martin and Horvath are foes for now in the New Zealand national league, the duo cannot wait to join forces in July.

“We had a chat before and after the game last week and we’re both really looking forward to playing for the South Dragons and we’re just waiting for everything to fall into place and to get down there and work hard towards next season,” Martin said.
