The San Antonio Spurs have held off a late challenge from the Cleveland Cavaliers to take a 2-0 series lead in the NBA finals series after a 103-92 victory.

The Spurs led by 27 points at three-quarter-time before a LeBron James inspired comeback brought the Cavaliers back to within eight points with a little under five minutes left in the match.

But that was as close as they got, as Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan made sure the Spurs held on for the victory.

Earlier in the game, the Spurs built a huge lead on the back of some inspirational play from their big three in Parker, Ginobili and Duncan.

The Spurs led by 11 points at quarter time, 25 at half-time and 29 late during the third term, and apart from a lapse late in the match, controlled proceedings throughout.

Parker ended the match with a game-high 30 points, Ginobili netted 25, Duncan scored 23, while Francisco Elson contributed six points off the bench.

James led the Cavaliers with 25 points, rookie Daniel Gibson shot 15, Drew Gooden hit 13 and Sasha Pavlovic ended the match with 10 points.

The series now heads to Cleveland for games three and four, with game three to be held on Wednesday afternoon (AEST).
