South Dragons stars Jacob Holmes and Joe Ingles have led the Australia Post Boomers to three straight wins across the weekend, with the national side yet to be defeated at the halfway point of their nine-day tour of China.

The Boomers’ weekend hat trick was launched on Friday night when the young Australian line-up downed Croatia 80-56.

After a slow start the Boomers tightened up their defense to win the second term 22-7 and take a commanding 41-27 lead into the major break.

The Australians continued their passionate style of play to outscore their opponents 26-11 in the third term and establish a 67-38 three-quarter-time lead.

Croatia rallied to win the final term 18-13, but the Boomers were never in danger of conceding defeat.

New Zealand Breakers forward Oscar Foreman top-scored for the Australians with 17 points, while Sydney’s Mark Worthington contributed 13 points and Daniel Kickert added 11.

On Saturday the Boomers took their campaign to Foshan to meet the host nation. Playing in front of a hostile home crowd - and a television audience of over half a billion viewers - the Boomers fought out a gutsy 77-66 win.

After arriving at the court under police escort, the Australian side came out firing and, on top of strong defensive leads, opened up a solid 21-14 quarter-time lead.

The Boomers continued to play with tenacity and desperation at both ends of the court to extend their lead to 43-28 by halftime, winning the second quarter 19-14.

After the lead was pushed out to over 20 points early in the third term, a vocal home crowd lifted the home side, who surged late to win the quarter 21-16 and trail by just 10 points, 59-49.

The Boomers staved off a number of runs from team China in the fourth quarter, to register the 11-point win.

Perth Wildcats guard Damien Ryan scored a game-high 18 points including five-of-seven three point baskets, while Sydney King Mark Worthington contributed 16 points and 20-year-old Brisbane Bullets guard Adam Gibson added seven.

Overnight the Boomers again hit the road, traveling to Jiangmen City to record a 75-54 win over Italy.

With several members of the Australian team struck down by a serious virus, the Boomers dug deep to win all four quarters of play.

After taking a one-point lead into the first break the Boomers worked hard to establish a 34-26 buffer at the major change.

The Australians never took their foot of the pedal in the second half, restricting the impact of the Italian talls and scoring at a fast rate of their own to win the second half 42-29 and set up their third win in as many days.

Sydney Kings Forward Mark Worthington top-scored for the Boomers with 15 points, while Damien Ryan (Perth Wildcats) contributed 13 points and Joe Ingles (South Dragons) and Daniel Kickert (Livorno, Italy) added 11 points each.

“The way this group played tonight given the adversity we were under with players and staff being so ill, to get a result like this is an unbelievable effort,” Boomers assistant coach Gordon MacLeod said.

“At the end of the game the coaching staff looked at each other and was just amazed by the performance and about how they were able to step up for a third straight day.

“It was in-the-trenches stuff and the most pleasing aspect of the win was not once did their level of intensity drop off.

“Our defensive intensity really laid the platform for the win and these guys play harder than anyone else out there so to produce this kind of performance is extremely satisfying.

“With the talent they had on the floor, to keep them to just 54 points indicated just what a phenomenal performance it was.”
