Seebohm fires for Emus
17/07/2007
Just 10 weeks out from his NBL debut and Shannon Seebohm is making huge waves on the international basketball scene at the FIBA World Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Seebohm and the Emus will today contest the first of three crossover games in round two of the world junior event, when they take on Korea ahead of games against Argentina and Spain.

The Emus enter the crossover round as one of only four undefeated teams in the competition, alongside France, Japan and the USA.

And Seebohm, the youngest member of the Crazy John’s South Dragons’ line-up in season 2007/08, has made a massive impact for the Emus since the commencement of the world event last Thursday.

The 18-year-old gun posted six points and four boards in the Emus’ first-up win over Turkey on Thursday (77-65) before going on to record six points, four rebounds and one assist against Nigeria on Friday (77-73) and10 points, four boards, one assist in the Emus’ 81-70 defeat of Canada at the weekend.

Seebohm scored the first four points of the Canadian showdown to again finish amongst the junior national team’s top scorers.

Closer to home, Matt Shanahan’s Ballarat Miners hit some late-season form at the weekend with two victories in the SEABL.

The Miners scored a nailbiting 127-125 win over North West Tasmania on Friday night before demolishing rivals Nunawading on Sunday, 125-102. In a dominant performance, Shanahan scored 25 points to be named MVP.

The Miners’ victorious weekend sees them out to a 7-18 season record with one round to play.

In BigV action, Brent Hobba and Simon Conn wrapped up their regular season campaigns with two comprehensive wins ahead of the finals this weekend.

Hobba (10 points, eight rebounds, one assist) and the Dandenong Rangers stitched up top spot on the ladder with a 111-90 win over Ringwood on Saturday night, while Conn (21 points, 11 boards, three assists) and the Sandringham Sabres scored a 116-88 defeat over third-placed Warrnambool.

Despite the absence of big-man Matt Burston - at camp with the Boomers on the Gold Coast - the Waverley Falcons scored two hard-fought wins at the weekend, posting an 86-80 victory over Werribee and a 106-101 derailment of Hume City. The results see the Falcons into fifth spot ahead of this week's playoffs.

This weekend sees Melbourne take on Waverley and Warrnambool face Hume City in the two BigV elimination playoffs, with Dandenong to meet Sandringham on Saturday night for direct qualification to the grand final.
