Gibson new Dragons' CEO
6/03/2006
The South Dragons today named former chairman of the NBL CEO’s group Barry Gibson as their new Chief Executive Officer. Gibson had served as CEO of the Townsville Crocodiles since January 2004.

“Barry has an impeccable track record as a leader who understands what’s best for the fans and consistently delivered a fantastic game-night product in Townsville,” said Dragons co-owner Mark Cowan.

“I was particularly impressed with his work on the All-Star game a couple of years ago and it’s no wonder the Crocs have had the best league attendances for a couple of seasons.”

Hot on the announcement of NBA All-Star Mark Price as the Dragons’ inaugural coach and Shane Heal’s intent to join the franchise, Gibson’s recruitment marks a key off-court coup for the club.

"The opportunity that presented itself with the Dragons was one that offered everything with respect to me being able to get much closer to my family, which was very important to me, whilst also offering a significant challenge professionally,” said Gibson.

"Having sat back and watched what the Dragons have done so far it has been evident to me that they are committed to being successful both on and off the court. The challenge of being involved with a club form start up is an exciting opportunity that I am really looking forward to.

"It was certainly a tough decision to leave Townsville, as I've really enjoyed my role here. I've worked for a fantastic ownership group who afforded me a great opportunity four years ago that I will always be very grateful for. I've learnt so much in my time at the club and I know that will hold me in good stead for the future both personally and professionally.

Gibson will remain with the Crocodiles for a further eight weeks, working with the club to secure a new head coach and CEO replacement.
