Frontcourt to front office: Timms joins Dragons
17/03/2006
Australian basketball legend Michele Timms will join the South Dragons off-court team, today accepting a role as the club’s basketball development officer.

Timms, who was only the second athlete to have her WNBA jersey retired, spent the 2001 season as an assistant with the Phoenix Mercury.

At first interviewed for an assistant coaching position with the Dragons, Timms ruled herself out of the running for a coaching role due to family reasons.

“It’s exciting to be part of a start-up franchise that has the vision of the South Dragons,” said Timms, who is currently busy with a commentary role for the Commonwealth Games.

"Although the timing wasn’t right to step into a coaching position, I think this role is well suited to my personality and I can't wait to get started straight after the Games.

"My goal is still to be an assistant coach for an NBL team and if the opportunity arises down the track I'd put my hand up.

“Now is an exciting period for Victorian basketball, and I truly believe that Australian basketball as a whole is on the cusp of something special."

Club co-owner Raphael Geminder is thrilled to have Timms on board. “Michele’s playing credentials speak for themselves, she’s always been known for her community profile and grass roots understanding,” he said.

“It’s vital that we get our association relationships right from the start, and Michele’s the perfect character to front our club."

As basketball development officer, Timms will be responsible for the South Dragons' community awareness programs.

“Unfortunately Michele was unable to consider a coaching role, but to have her on board in building our connection with the basketball community is a real cornerstone to this franchise,” said co-owner Mark Cowan.

As part of a two-year tenure, Timms will be charged with liaising with Victorian basketball associations and the South Dragons schools program.

Timms, the WNBL’s all-time leader in assists and steals was named Australia’s international player of the year in 1994. In 2000 Timms captained the Opals to a silver medal at the Sydney Olympic games.
