Boomers bulldoze Turkey
1/08/2007
Australian has continued its impressive European form with a comfortable 69-54 over Turkey in Italy on Wednesday morning (AEST).
Sydney Kings guard Jason Smith top scored for the Boomers with 13 points in an even team effort.
Australia's Russian-based forward David Andersen added 12 points and hauled in 12 rebounds in a solid support role.
Boomers coach Brian Goorjian said the win had a touch of revenge after Turkey defeated Australia by eight points at the 2006 World Championship.
The quality of the Turkish outfit - which contained three NBA players - made the win even more significant.
"I feel really good about that game," Goorjian said.
"David Andersen did a great job restricting their NBA All-Star Mehmet Okur to two points and that was the key."
"They had three NBA players and you look around at the other teams at this tournament and Italy has also got three and Serbia has got four."
"We’re not overly talented by comparison but we're playing hard and while the win might not have been pretty, it was a win."
Australia was ready to play from the outset and after one quarter opened a double digit lead, 22-12.
Turkey upped the ante in the second quarter and the Boomers struggled to score as the advantage eroded entirely by half-time as both sides went into the long break locked at 33-all.
The Australians bounced out after the break to take control of the contest once more and went on with it in the last term to run out 15-point winners.
NBA-bound Brad Newley, already under an injury cloud with a strained ankle, was unable to take the court due to a stomach virus.
After a rest day, Australia will face the might of Serbia in the early hours of Friday morning (AEST).
