Utah Jazz on song
11/05/2007
The Utah Jazz have defeated the Golden State Warriors 127-117 in overtime to open up a decisive 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven Western Conference series semi-finals.
The Jazz trailed by five points with 52 seconds left in regulation, but a Carlos Boozer jumper followed by a Deron Williams floater forced an overtime period which the Jazz dominated.
Boozer added a further six points to his 30-point haul in the extra period, while Derek Fisher and Williams hit crucial three-point bombs as the Jazz clinched the victory.
Earlier, the Warriors started the match well, jumping out to a three-point lead at quarter time on the back of some hot shooting from guard Jason Richardson, who netted 12 of his 27 points in the opening term.
Trailing 28-31 at quarter time, the Jazz needed a spark, and they got it from an unlikely source in the form of Gordan Giricek who nailed two important three-pointers as the Jazz took a 63-58 lead into the main break.
Although the Jazz extended that margin to 11 points with a little under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Warriors rallied under the influence of point-guard Baron Davis.
Taking a 90-89 lead into the final term, Mehmet Okur hit a couple of crucial buckets early in the last stanza to open up a six-point lead for the home team, but the Warriors hit back.
First it was Stephen Jackson with a three-pointer, then Richardson joined the party with another three, before Matt Barnes hit a high pressure jump shot to give the Warriors a five-point lead as Jazz coach Jerry Sloan called a time-out.
From then on it was all Utah though as Boozer, Williams and Okur ensured the Jazz opened up a 2-0 lead on the Warriors, with the series heading to Oakland for games three and four.
While Boozer led the way for the Jazz in the scoring department, five of his team-mates played a big part, ending the game with double figures in the scoring column.
Okur drained 23, Russian Andrei Kirilenko hit 20, Paul Millsap was excellent off the bench with 10, while Williams ended the match with 17 points and 14 assists.
Davis netted a game-high 36 points for the Warriors, while Richardson, Jackson (18 points), Harrington (17 points) and Barnes (12 points) tried hard.
